Chancery/ Cancellaresca

Inspired by a visit to the Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520–1920 exhibition at Tate Britain last week, I made this piece in the style of Esther Inglis (1571–1624) a French born calligrapher whose family settled in Scotland to escape religious persecution in France. She personally wrote over 60 books in her lifetime. This is my version of her work, written in her style of Cancelleresca corsiva or chancery script, with a 'Ghent-Bruges' style illumination.

Writing: Walnut ink with goose quill
Illustration: Gouache.
