Merovingian

Here is a sample book page in a Merovingian script which dates from the 6th century, and was used in Frankish kingdoms after the fall of the Roman Empire. It marks the transition from Roman cursive to Carolingian and was influenced by Irish monks forming Abbeys in France. This piece is based on a book by Gregory de Tours ‘Historica Francorum’ written in Corbie Abbey between 0538-0594. This is my version of a section of that book. In Latin, written in walnut ink and of course, French Herbin ‘Rouge Caroubier’ ink. Illustrated with watercolours.
